Soak in the Sun on a Terraza

Per the saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers,” the rain is gone and it is time to enjoy the weather we have been waiting for. Bars, restaurants and cafés all around the city are opening up their terrazas and creating an ideal place to relax in the afternoon. Today, we bring you five of our favorite plazas to welcome the warmth.

Plaza la Paja (Image by Aneta Quaraishy)

1. Plaza dos de Mayo: Tucked away in Malasaña, this plaza is never void of visitors. Grab a seat at famed Pepe Botella for a drink, go for a slice of pizza at Maravillas, or cool off with ice cream from Acquolina. On Saturdays until the end of June, you will also find El Dosde Market  where you never know what you might come across.

2. Plaza la Paja: Rumored to be Madrid’s oldest plaza, it is La Latina’s hub for vegetarian restaurants, like Viva la Vida, and some of the best cake in the city at Delic. Surrounded by historic buildings and tall trees, it’s a great escape from the bustling city center nearby.

3. Plaza Santa Ana: We all know of Plaza Santa Ana with the stunning Teatro Español hovering at one end and the Reina Victoria hotel at the other. While often crowded, it is a great place to people watch and have some drinks. La Moderna, Cervecería Santa Ana, and Naturbier are just a few of the places you can choose from. This plaza is said to have been one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite spots in the city.

4. Plaza Comendadoras: For a peaceful escape, head to this plaza in quiet Conde Duque. You can grab tacos at La Taquería de Birra or a drink at Café Moderno.

5. Plaza de Oriente: With a prime view the Royal Palace, this plaza has plenty of space to relax in the gardens amongst the statues of Spain’s former monarchs. There are usually street musicians playing as well, providing a nice soundtrack to your outing. If you find yourself in the mood for a drink, head to nearby Café de Oriente.

Stay tuned next week for five of the best places to catch a drink outside as the sun goes down. In the meantime, let us know where some of your favorite terrazas in Madrid are.
