Mandarin Language Exchange in Madrid

Chinese languages are getting more and more popular in Madrid.In fact there already are primary schools which offer Mandarin.Another place where you can practice Mandarin is a language exchange.It happens every Friday from 10pm at Faborit located at Calle Alcala, 21, close to metro Sevilla.Admission and participation fee is 1 Euro.See the Facebook group here.

Films about the Financial Crisis

The social and economic crisis has shaken the foundations of the dominant economic model. This global situation is generating new sources of social exclusion as well as consolidate and extend existing processes of exclusion. Moreover, this crisis has already led to a rethinking of economic and social policies, what is needed is to generate changes to achieve a more just and united world.

Through seven feature films and documentaries,  the impact of economic crisis will be analyzedon both the individual and society. RAIS Professionals Foundation, professors and professionals specialized in economic and social issues, as well as film critics and programmers share their views with the audience and create a space where the cinema is an open door to reflection.Enrace is 3 Euros.The sessions are in Spanish and this campaign ends on the 28th of July.

YouTube Preview ImageFor all you Harry Potter fans out there, the final Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, has come to Madrid. If you want to see it in English, it’s playing at Yelmo Cines Ideal (C/ Doctor Cortezo, 6, metro: Tirso de Molina, L 1). The final chapter begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue their quest of finding and destroying the Dark Lord’s three remaining Horcruxes, the magical items responsible for his immortality.

The drama “Conviction” is playing at Renoir Princesa (C/ Princesa, 3 Y 5, metro: Plaza de España, L3 ). The movie follows a working mother, played by Hilary Swank,  who puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders.

Part I:Schools in Spain

One of the challenges of English speaking expat families is finding, not just the right school for their children, but an English instruction school at all in Spain. In general English is still not that big in Spain, but some Spanish regions like Madrid are trying to bridge the language gap. However, if a child is already English speaking, they will find the English levels of the newly inaugurated bilingual schools very low. The only other option is to find private or international schools. These schools also offer Spanish.

The only schools in Spain using English as the teaching language are foreign and international private schools. If your children attend public schools, they will be obligated to study all subjects in Spanish. In Madrid there are several private and international schools whose medium is English and the purpose of this article is to inform about the similarities and differences between education systems. An alternative solution might be to find colleges that offer accredited language instruction courses online. In another article we will treat the process of enrolling into a school as well as the fees.

Spanish Schooling System

Firstly let’s get to know the Spanish schooling system: Public schooling is compulsory and free of charge for all children from age 6 to age 16. However, in some autonomous regions books must be paid for, and in particular, in Madrid books are paid for. There are special needs schools available as well as schools for artistic learning and linguistics. All students receive vocational training in high school. However, as mentioned earlier public schools are predominantly Spanish instruction schools and the integration of foreign students is promoted through specific programmes and language bridging courses. The group members are Stefano Battaglia himself on the piano,Salvatore Maiore on the double bass and Roberto Dani on drums.
