Cheap Salsa Lessons

A few friends started talking about a place they go for cheap salsa lessons. They talked so much about it, and since the lessons are only €7, I finally decided to take my two left feet down to Discoteca Cats (C/ Julián Romea, 4, metro: Islas Filipinas, L7).

The place was packed, and not all of us were beginners. The first hour was only for beginners and then as the night progressed, the dances got more and more complicated- so much so that I finally had to bow out and sit at the bar awhile. But all in all, I learned quite a bit about salsa. It’s a fun night out if you like to dance- and are a good sport. I went on a Sunday at 7 pm, but they also offer lessons on Tuesday at 8 pm.

This weekend “The Help” is opening in English at Renoir Retiro (C/ Narvaez 42, metro: Ibiza, L9) and Yelmo Cines Ideal (C/ Doctor Cortezo, 6, metro: Tirso de Molina, L 1). The movie, which is already garnering serious Oscar buzz, follows a southern belle in the 1960`The Helps who suddenly decides to write a book about the African American maids in her town. Of course, this can’t be done without ruffling a few feathers and revealing a few secrets held by the town’s most prominent families.

Also playing at Yelmo Cines Ideal is  Contagion, starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. The thriller follows doctors trying to stop an outbreak of a deadly virus.
