This hot spring weather calls for a refreshing glass of Spanish white wine! As usual, you have a lot of choices when it comes to white wines. One important region is Rias Baixas in In the Northwest of Spain, the white Albariño grape flourishes.

This grape tends to have a pretty intense fruit flavor with moderate weight and structure. Thanks to all the rain in Galicia, the albariño is able to maintain a high acidity. This character allows it to be paired with many different foods. Some recommendations are seafood, chicken or veal, and Asian cuisine like Chinese or Thai. The grape is meant to be consumed young.

Here are a few makers to look out for:

  • Orballo Rías Baixas
  • Burgans Rías Baixas
  • Condes de Albarei Rías Baixas Salneval

Rioja Reserva 2005 Viña Eguía Reivew

This bargain wine was a bronze winner of the 2011 Decanter World Wine Awards. It’s a fabulous 100% Tempranillo value wine from Rioja, a region that had an “excellent” year in 2005. It goes well with bold flavors like meat dishes or a mature cheese. At Grandes Vinos near the Intercambiador Avenida de América, you can find this wine for just under 7 euros!

2009 Melior Review

Matarromera Melior in cheapinmadrid.com

Melior comes the Bodega Matarromera in Ribera del Duero, one of Madrid’s neighboring zones. It’s made with 90% Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. 2009 was an “excellent” year for wines from Ribera del Duero, so make sure to get this vintage if you pick up this maker. I found it for only 6 euros at Carrefour! It’s a lovely winemaker to support, as they are considered leaders in sustainable wine-making.

Like most medium-bodied Tempranillos, this wine’s flavor is heightened with food. It’s a great wine to accompany you at dinner time or over tapas.

Bohigas Brut Nature Cava Review

Have something to celebrate this weekend? A great option for your toast is Cava, a champagne method sparkling wine from Catalunya. You probably know that only sparkling wines that come from the Champagne region of France can have the denomination “Champagne”, but you may not realize that Cava is produced in virtually the same way! One particularly economical choice is the Bohigas Brut Nature Cava.

This family-run vineyard has been producing wine since before Columbus sailed the ocean blue and their customers are almost purely the Barcelona based.

This particular wine is available for ~9 euros in many supermarkets of Madrid. It’s well balanced and delicate and is lovely with turrón or other desserts. It’s also enjoyable on its own!
