There will be the best music from the 80’s, a lot of gifts sponsored by Beefeater London and, as always, the most fun international atmosphere. It costs €10 to get in and that includes one drink. Madrid will be celebrating International Museum Day this Friday, May 18 with free admission to many wonderful museums around Madrid. It is the 35th anniversary of this event, which is promoted by the International Council of Museums. The theme this year is “Museums in a Changing World. New Challenges, New Inspirations.” In honor of this day, it will be free to get into many museums, such as the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the Reina Sofia.

Special talks will be given at the Prado Museum throughout the day. The Thyssen-Bornemisza will be offering a wide range of activities, including dance performances at 12:30 and 4:30pm. At the Reina Sofia there will be an array of activities, including performing arts in unique spaces, guided tours, and the presentation of RRS (Radio del Museo Reina Sofía). On Friday, the Sorolla Museum will be holding a free drawing and painting event from 5 to 8pm in the Museum’s lovely garden.

The European Night of Museums will be celebrated this Saturday, May 19. READ MORE »

This Thursday, May 17 there will be a short film festival at 10 pm at Cine Capitol (Calle Gran Vía, 41, metro: Callao). The festival, called Cortogenia, is free. Keep in mind that these short films will all be in Spanish, so if you’re here to practice Spanish this is great way to do it!

“Inglés y Tapas: English Fun with Delicious Food” is a meetup group for English speakers who want to meet new people and for people who want to practice their English. It was started by Spaniard Nuria Zuazo and British Expat Vanessa Fowke. The group meets every second Friday at 7 p.m. at Fresno 75 (c/ Principe de Vergara, 210, metro: Concha Espina). I had a chat with its co-founder and coordinator, Nuria.

CiM: Why did you start this meetup group?
Nuria: When Vanessa and I started Inglés y Tapas it was just simply to get Anglo-speaking people to get to know Spanish people—real Spanish people, not only the touristy side of it, but real people. And the advantage for us was that we could practice English and get to know people. READ MORE »

1.    Practice your Spanish. As a guiri in Spain, you may be here for only a few months, or you may be here permanently. But either way, you know you should be making the most of your time here by improving your Spanish. Joining a language exchange group is a great way to do this.
2.    Hear real accents. Everyone knows that the way voiceover actors speak for language learning listening exercises is not at all like the way real people speak. If you’re tired of textbook Spanish, you’ll enjoy hearing languages as they are really spoken.
3.    Learn slang. Formal words can get you only so far in the real world.
4.    Meet local friends. If you’ve been here a while but you haven’t met many Madrileños, it might be time to get out of your guiri bubble. READ MORE »
