Multilinkual Intercambio

MultilinkualWe at Cheap in Madrid believe that intercambio groups, which are language exchange clubs, are a great way to practice another language. That’s why we’ve been profiling intercambio groups around Madrid. Multilinkual is a vibrant intercambio that meets on Tuesdays at 10pm at O’Neill’s (c/ Príncipe 12 metro: Sol) and on Thursdays at 10pm at Beer Station (Cuesta de Santo Domingo 22, metros: Santo Domingo/Ópera/Callao). Attendance is fee and everyone is welcome. I sat down with David Poza, who runs the group.

CiM: Did you found this intercambio group? When? Why was it started?
David: I founded it about 14 years ago. I taught Spanish when I finished university whilst I looked for a job and I had international friends in Madrid and wanted to keep my English, French and Italian alive. READ MORE »

Downtown Madrid Intercambio

Downtown MadridHere at Cheap In Madrid (CiM) we’ve been encouraging everyone who wants to improve their Spanish (or any other language for that matter) to join an intercambio (language exchange) group. The Downtown Madrid Intercambio is another great intercambio group. It meets every Thursday from 18:00 to 11:30 at the Downtown Madrid bar (c/ San Mateo 21, metro: Alonso Martínez or Tribunal) and it is free. I sat down with the woman running the intercambio, Gemma Pascual, for a chat.

Bookcrossing Movement

Bookcrossing is a movement that is turning the world into a global library people exchanges and contacts anywhere in the world. This Sunday the 18th, from midday at Museo de América (Avenida Reyes Católicos, 6. Metro: Moncloa) many people will participate in a bookcrossing event.Bookcrossing involves leaving books around, anywhere and picking up others left by participants. To participate simply bring books you want to give away and look out for others which could interest you.Remember the theme, Read and Release.

Madrid Babel Intercambio

Joining a Language Exchange group here in Madrid (locally known as Intercambios) is a great way to practice your Spanish and meet new people. The Cheap In Madrid Blog (CiM) is profiling the various different intercambio groups, so you can get an idea of all the different opportunities you have in this city to improve your Spanish.

The Madrid Babel intercambio group, founded in 2000, now has over 25,000 members, and in 2009 and 2010 won the prize for “Best Intercambio of the Year” from European Vibe Magazine. They meet Wednesdays starting at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays starting at 7:00 p.m. at Café Galdós (Los Madrazo 10, metro: Sevilla). There’s no entrance fee, and everyone is welcome.

I had a chat with of Madrid Babel’s founder and leader, Fran Rodríguez Veiga, about his group. I also had the chance to speak to the people who help him organizing events: Paula Lorenzo Geada, Desislava, Gerardo Khaski and Abel Brey Carrillo.

CiM: What is the atmosphere like at the intercambios?
Fran: Usually around 200 people show up, from students to professionals, 20 to 50 years old, from about 30 different nations.
