Where to celebrate “Cinco de Mayo”

May03
2012
Leave a Comment Written by Carmen

This Saturday May 5th is “Cinco de Mayo” – a festivity celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla. The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage & pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom & democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. But nowadays, it’s mainly just an excuse to eat Mexican food, drink Mexican cerveza & tequila and listen to mariachi music. Just as on St. Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish, on Cinco de Mayo everyone is Mexican! :)

So where would one in Madrid celebrate this festivity? Well, with nearly 5,000 Mexicans residing in Madrid, one can easily find Mexican restaurants, bars and specialty shops in nearly every neighborhood. Whether you choose to celebrate out or in your home, here is a list of Mexican restaurants, bars & shops for you to enjoy the fiesta with friends this Saturday. View links for more info…and if you choose to eat out, be sure to make a reservation in advance!

Madrid’s Most Famous Cocktail Bar: Museo Chicote

Take a step back to the 1930s and drink like the stars at Madrid’s most famous cocktail bar, Museo Chicote. Said to have once been visited by Ernest Hemingway, Grace Kelly, Sofia Loren, and Frank Sinatra, the bar continues to welcome famous guests, but you can also find businessmen coming in for a post-work drink and young people after midnight listening to a live DJ on the weekends.

While the art deco decor has remained the same, the drink menu is anything but outdated. The new year brought in a new bartender, Italian-born Francesco Cavaggioni, who has revamped their offerings to include unique concoctions like bacon-infused bourbon and basil vodka. Of course, if it’s a classic Manhattan or gin fizz that you prefer, he can mix that up too. They are open everyday at 5pm and serve crowds until 3am. Its central location on Calle Gran Vía 12, makes it an easy stop whether you are looking to chat with a friend over inventive drinks or stay out late into the night listening to live music in an atmosphere you cannot find anywhere else in the city.

Bar Buzz: Cuevas de Sesamo

Walking along Calle Principe you might not notice the unassuming entrance into Cuevas de Sesamo, but as you descend the stairs into the cavernous space, you realize you have stumbled upon something special. When the doors opened in 1950 it was only a café and has since evolved into an artistic hideaway where Ernest Hemmingway himself visited. Quotes cover the walls, contemporary artwork hangs, and the lights are kept dim, creating a romantic and cozy atmosphere for a night out.
The bar is fully stocked with reasonably priced drinks but you will find most sharing pitchers of their notorious sangria. For 14 Euros you can get a large pitcher big enough to split between four. After that, your next one is discounted for 11 Euros (the same price as a small one). If you want something to snack on while you sip, they offer plates of jamón, cheese, chorizo, chips, and olives, all ranging between 7-10 Euros. If you come at prime time, you can be sure there will be live piano music playing and you might run into a heavy crowd; however, this unique boho spot is a welcoming break away from other bustling bars found around the center and well worth the wait.

March Restaurant Review #4: San Wich

Mar30

Opened in July 2010, this small Chilean bar, voted the best in 2011 & 2012 by 11870.com, is the place to go when in a hurry to grab a bite to eat. You won’t find white sliced Bimbo bread here, all plates are designed and created by a Chilean woman in the Chilean Embassy and items are made to order by fellow latinos.

Aside from the All American Bacon Cheeseburger and Hot Dog, their star menu items are the Barros Luco, Mechada a la Pobre with fried egg, and the Chacareo with “porotes verdes” = green beans. Whaaa? Yes, it’s very typical in Chile to put green beans in a sandwich than lettuce. I have to say that it was strange to hear but amazing to taste, the perfect combination of crispy beans and spicy aji sauce with the tender beef. I can see why it is a favorite and the most sold item on the menu!

The desserts are all typical Chilean too, a merengue covered cookie ‘sandwich’ filled with dulce de leche and miniature dessert “shots” like the lemon meringue pie and cheese cake, without the crust. A perfect ending after a scrumptious san wich.

They also serve breakfasts Monday-Friday from 9am-12pm serving freshly made juices and scrambled eggs. Next time you’re cruising through Chueca, or not, be sure to swing by and have a taste of Latin America in a quick bite. Located on C/ Hortaleza, 78.

View their website, Yelp & Facebook for more info.
