Free Public Library Services in Madrid

If you are planning to stay in Madrid for an extended period of time, I highly recommend getting a card at a local library. The reasons are clear:
  • Access to a wide variety of fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and reference books.
  • Access to moviesmusiceBooks, and language learning resources. 
  • Free WIFI on location.
  • Workshops for kids and adults.
  • It’s absolutely free! (only requires DNI, NIE, or Passport Number to obtain card)
I’ve been especially enjoying my time at the recently opened Biblioteca Pública Municipal Iván de Vargas in La Latina because of the “Madrid Room.” Endless resources about art, architecture, history, film, literature, and more…all unique to Madrid. They even have a shelf full of travel guides on the city, near-by destinations, and treks. Some libraries even have e-book readers for loan! Other Public Library Systems:

Another interesting extension of the public library system is the Bibliometro, a set of library branches located right inside metro stations! To join, you must get a “carnét” at one of the sectors (with your passport). You will then have access to all sectors. You can check out 1 book for 15 days.
