If you are American,for the first few months you could drive around with an International Licence.However,as soon as you get residential documentation you will need to take the theory and practical exam.In Spain you can only do this through a driving school.Driving accompanied without a licence is a crime.

However,if you are American,which seems to be the case,from NYC..yes you will need to do the theory and the practical exam from scratch and in Spanish.

If you are an EU citizen you dont have to do any licence convertions.You can simply drive in Madrid.I assume that you are Dutch or are coming from Amsterdam,right?

will I be issued with a Spanish Provisional Licence which means I will be able to drive unaccompanied or will I have to take theory and practise test in Madrid to obtain a full licence.

True,fon non-EU citizens its both a costly and a time consuming exercise!

This can be a nightmare – fortunately EU persons can usually exchange for Spanish OK, just had an article published on DLs – http://issuu.com/timadmin/docs/march12 page 8

Since I have a driver’s licence from one of this country It will benefit me a lot to travel and could validate it. Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it a lot
