Top 5 winter city breaks

Whether you’re seeking a bargain or to avoid the crowds, some European cities are infinitely better to visit in winter. Hot weather is for sunbathing on beaches, and the cold is perfect for sightseeing in cities. Here are our top 5 European cities to visit in winter.

1. Istanbul

Is Istanbul in Europe or Asia? No one quite knows, but it makes a great winter destination either way. Don’t be put off by the distance: Istanbul flights from Stansted with low-cost carrier Pegasus take around four hours and are no more expensive than travel to France or Germany.

Enjoy the beautiful sights of the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace, and pick up some last minute Christmas gifts at the local markets.

2. Berlin

Travel to Berlin for some authentic Christmas markets, bratwurst, gluhwein and steins of beer. Then soak up the history of this fascinating city; from the Berlin Wall and the endless museums, the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag.

Walk to the top of the Reichstag’s dome, designed by Norman Foster, for incredible views over the city. Then head out to party at one of the city’s famous nightspots; there’s something for everyone with techno and indie and everything in between, in what is truly a 24-hour city.

3. Lisbon

Portugal is not all about beach holidays to the Algarve; visit Lisbon in winter and enjoy their mild winter climate. All tourist attractions are open all year round so you won’t miss out. Head to Alfama to sample the old town, and make sure you visit the Chiada district for a mix of culture and clubbing.

4. Rome

Rome’s main attractions are the victims of overcrowding in summer, but in the winter everything calms down, and you can truly relax and immerse yourself in the history of this beautiful city. The museums are half empty, queues diminished and the prices much lower in winter. You’ll be able to get a reservation at the restaurants you had your heart set on and visit the Vatican with ease.

It’s also warmer than many other European cities in the winter with highs of 13 degrees.

5. Budapest

Try out Europe’s biggest outdoor ice rink in its beautiful setting at the foot of Vajdahunyad Castle for a breath of fresh air and then experience one of their many natural hot spring baths to warm up again afterwards.

There’s plenty to see around the city too; make sure you see the gothic Royal Palace and the colourful Matthias Church. Wrap up warm though, as the temperatures in winter can be below freezing.
