The rising temperatures in the city are ushering in an increasing assortment of fun, interesting events in Madrid in June. Here are just five suggestions for the events you shouldn’t miss this month.
Madrid Beer Week
This year June gets kicked off by a beer festival which takes place from June 3rd to June 12th. For this year’s third edition of the event, a variety of activities are planned, including factory visits, brewing workshops, presentations of new beers from Spain, Belgium, the UK and the US as well as many opportunities to sample a diverse group of beers. La Latina Pincho Week 2016
Madrid is no stranger to tapas routes but this one is particularly noteworthy as it takes place in one of the most celebrated areas for tapas, La Latina. Almost 50 bars and restaurants are participating, including many along the famed Cava Baja, and a mere 2,50 euros will get you a pincho and a small bottle of Estrella Damm beer. Afterwards, you can vote for the best pincho online and one lucky voter will receive a tablet and one of 5 coupons for free tapas.
PhotoEspaña
One of the premier art festivals of Spain starts on June 1st and runs until August 28th. The theme for this year is an
exploration of Europe in all of its facets. The international photography festival consists of official photography exhibits in various galleries, museums and cultural spaces throughout the city; photowalks and Festival Off where the most alternative selections are shown. On June 24th, the most popular activity of the festival, the nocturnal Photo Marathon will take place. Anyone can participate as long as you have a public Instagram account and you sign up in advance. During the marathon, participants will have the opportunity to see their pictures on the big screen of the Callao cinema, winners will be chosen at the end of the night and awarded prizes in Callao Square.
Rollerskating Marathon Madrid
The biggest rollerskating event in Madrid happens this year on Sunday June 12th. There are three ways of participating: the Patinada Popular is a 6 kilometer circuit suitable for children eight and up as well as skaters with a basic to medium level while the Marathon and 24K circuits are designed for advanced skaters over the age of sixteen. Inscriptions close on June 7th. It’s also important to note that half of all proceeds from the Patinada Popular go to charitable, social organizations. However, you can still enjoy the event even if you aren’t a skater as the circuit runs through several iconic streets of Madrid this June.
Madrid Gay Pride
Closing out the month is Madrid Orgullo or MADO, the largest urban event in Europe and one of the most popular LGBTQ events in the world. It takes place from June 29th to July 3rd and that week is jam packed with street celebrations, open air concerts, performances and expositions centred squarely where else but Chueca the popular LGBTQ friendly neighbourhood of Madrid. The piece de resistance of the celebration is a huge street parade which sets off from Atocha to Colon at 6:30PM on Saturday July 2nd. While the parade will definitely be fun, the aim of Pride Week is always to highlight the campaign for diversity and equal rights and this year’s focus is real change in the laws as well as more visibility and recognition of bisexuals.
