Succulent Sandwiches in La Casa Tomada

There aren’t many places in Madrid that can serve a good sandwich. Though few and far between, we now have one centrally located…and a crowd pleasure. La Casa Tomada has made a name for itself with their succulent, huge, and egregious sandwiches. And we’re here to tell you more…

The restaurant La Casa Tomada takes its name from the story by Julio Cortazar, in which two brothers are evicted from their home and take only a few stamps and house keys. In real life, they are Venezuelan brothers Jose Antonio del Pozo (cook) and Jose Miguel del Pozo (illustrator) who join their passions to open the house in Madrid last year, after having done so in Venezuela years prior, creating a gastronomic and cultural space, where you can eat and artists exhibit their work.

It is a warm, friendly and informal space where the food is intended to be shared and enjoyed eating with your fingers. The menu is extensive, with a variety of starters, salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, fries and desserts. We have made a trip through it, stopping at each of the representative dishes of the house.

For starters we ordered their Cheddar Jalapeno Poppers and their loaded Chili Cheese Fries, topped with chili con carne, melted cheddar cheese, jalapenos, diced red onion, cilantro, bacon and a fried egg. A unique twist to the American classic!

For the main course, none other than the grand sandwiches. We tried three types:

  1. Teriyaki – beef strips marinated in soy sauce, sauteed with peppers and onions, topped with teriyaki sauce, toasted sesame seeds, cilantro and chives.
  2. Roast Beef – homemade grilled roast beef strips, lettuce, tomato, alfalfa, red onion and cheese.
  3. Indian – sauteed chicken breast with curry, green pepper, onion, raisins and coriander

We also ordered the Oregano-Parmesan Fries accompanied by 6 different dipping sauces (not on the menu, ask for them!)

And finally, when we couldn’t eat anymore, we had squeeze in some desserts –  a slice of cheesecake & brownie a la mode.

Did I mentioned that they have a wide selection of artisan beers? The whole meal was washed down by the Spanish craft ale Mustache.

Without further ado, I recommend that you go to try it with friends and you share the different portions.
