Wednesday, May 18th is the International Museum Day 2016 where museums open their doors for free throughout the day with activities to enjoy.

This year’s theme is “Museums and Cultural Landscapes” highlighting the responsibility of museums with the landscape of that part, which can contribute with their knowledge and competencies, being active protagonists of their management and good maintenance. The main mission of museums is to watch over the heritage, whether it is inside or outside its walls. Its natural vocation is to expand its mission and deploy their own activities in the open field of cultural heritage and landscape of that part, which can take on different levels of responsibility.

The link between museums and cultural heritage is to rise to the idea that museums also function as an active center territorial protection of the cultural landscape. Responsible for the surrounding landscape, the museum also has a mission to protect and preserve the environmental heritage in order to promote a respectful development. A museum responsible for the landscape assumes, at the same time, its role interpretive center heritage and territory, thus promoting knowledge and raising its inhabitants and those who visit it in its constitutive values, and requesting his intervention for conservation and dissemination.

  1. This Saturday is May 16, not May 18. My understanding is that May 18 is International Museum Day, but this Saturday, many museums will be celebrating La Noche del Museos. Cannot seem to find a list of participating museums, however, and the one you linked to in this article is from 2013.

    1. Hello Emily, thank you for your comment. You have read our 2013 article, hence the incorrect date. We have now updated this article for 2015 with the activities for Monday the 18th. Enjoy the International Day of Museums!
