Casa América: El Palacio de Linares

Casa América: El Palacio de Linares

Built in the 19th century the Palacio de Linares, with its Neo-Baroque design, faces the Plaza de Cibeles.  José de Murga, the Marquis of Linares, built the palace to live in.  The Palacio de Linares showcases four-stories of beautiful decorated rooms, an intricate marble staircase, servant quarters, offices, libraries and even a ghost.  Legend has it that the Linares Palace is haunted by a little girl who is searching for her mother.  José de Murga’s son married a humble girl despite the difference in wealth between them.  It turns out that this woman was in fact his sister.  José de Murga had a relationship with a peasant woman and his son’s new wife was his sister.  By the time that José de Murga had told his son the truth, the couple had already had a daughter.  Because of the circumstance, the little girl was sent to an orphanage and the son and his sister-wife lived on separate floors in the palace.  It is this little girl who haunts the palace.
