Where to Watch the Superbowl in Madrid
It’s that time of year again…Superbowl Sunday! On February 1st, the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots in Superbowl XLIX and with the 6 hour time difference, the game starts late. Very late. Kickoff isn’t until 12:30am (00:30) but if you are up for it, don’t worry you will not be alone. Even though American football is not very popular in Spain or even in Europe, on this night you’ll find all sorts of expats and Spaniards huddled together late into the wee hours of the morning to celebrate THE BIG GAME.
Your best bet for watching the game is to pick one of Madrid’s Irish pubs (Irish Rover, O’Neills, James Joyce, Dubliners) or American Restaurants like TGIFridays or Hard Rock Cafe. Try to show up early, grabbing some food, drinks and a table before the masses arrive. If you have a big group you can also check with the bar and may be able to reserve a table or section with a clear view. Now if you want to stay in and stream it online, there are several sites you can watch it from like NBC Sports, ESPN, and FoxSports. As for the famous commercials, they will not be aired overseas but you can easily watch them online. Same goes for the halftime show. So get those plans in preparation and may the best team win!
