Films in English

CarnageThis weekend, Roman Polanski’s critically acclaimed new film “Carnage” is playing in English here in Madrid. The film is based on a French play by Yasmina Reza, which was translated into English as Broadway’s Tony award winning God of Carnage. When a schoolboy beats up his classmate, the victim’s parents Penelope (Jodie Foster) and Michael (John C. Reilly) invite the bully’s parents Nancy (Kate Winslet) and Alan (Christoph Waltz) over to their posh New York apartment to discuss the matter. A friendly discussion soon disintegrates into chaos.

It is on in English at Renoir Princesa (C/ Princesa, 3 Y 5, metro: Plaza de España, L3 ), at Renoir Retiro (C/ Narvaez 42, metro: Ibiza, L9), and at Yelmo Cines Ideal (C/ Doctor Cortezo, 6, metro: Tirso de Molina, L 1).
Another film generating Oscar buzz, “A Dangerous Method”, can be seen this weekend in English at Yelmo Cines Ideal and Renoir Retiro. The story centers on Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a patient who influenced both Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender).  It speculates on whether she actually had an affair with Jung, as some historians believe. Screenwriter Christopher Hampton (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “Atonement,” “The Quiet American“) based the script on his own play, The Talking Cure, and on John Kerr’s A Most Dangerous Method. The stellar script and a standout performance by Mortensen makes this film well worth seeing.
