The limited possibilities music lovers of the nineteenth century had to hear a symphonic work performed live led to all kinds of arrangements, many of which were made by composers themselves. The case of the German composer Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) is emblematic, as he himself transcribed his symphonies for piano 4 hands, a specific form of duet on a single piano with two players, which can be heard in their entirety in this cycle and in chronological order.
