The association of merchants in the Barrio de Las Letras district and with the support of the City of Madrid, have organized the Mercado de la Rana (Frog Market). Traders adopted the name in honor of the former name of the street of Lope de Vega, Cantarranas (singing frogs), which was so named due to its proximity to the streams in the area.
It is an initiative to be held on the first Saturday of each month to promote some products from the 50 participating retailers.
The initiative aims to encourage consumption in the neighborhood and highlight the “pedestrianization” strategy of many streets by the City Council Madrid. The first session of this market was held on May 5th. The participating shops can be identified by special logos visible on the facades of their stores and through special signage throughout the neighborhood. The next market will be on the 2nd of June 2012 on calle Huertas.
