Visit the Spontaneous Mega-Protest in Sol!

Over the past week, Puerta del Sol, the geographical center of Spain — check out KM 0 –  has transformed itself into the center of the nation’s political debate. Thousands of jobless citizens have organized their frustration in one monster protest that continues to thrive after more than a week. The tent-and-tarp city hosts vegetable gardens, food stands, a daycare, a medical tent, information booths and music. Signs implore the peaceful protestors to not botellon, Spanish for drink outside, which is illegal and could cause police intervention that would destroy the gathering.

This is your opportunity to experience something truly unique. Watch democracy in action, learn about the problems affecting Spain and Europe or eat some cheap food under the shade. The impressively organized gathering also features a library, newsstand and reading area, where protestors can be spotted reading about themselves in El País.

Puerta del Sol is, of course, located above the Sol Metro Station (Lines 1, 2 and 3). Attendees are frequently reminded by organizers to respect the cross streets and the Metro exits. During the afternoon, the event has a tranquil and friendly atmosphere. Go see modern Spanish history!
