Must-Visit Museums with Free Entrance

The following museums have free entrance on the indicated days:

Museo del Prado:       

Museo del Prado is one of the top 11 museums in the world. It features the most significant collection of Spanish art as well as other gems from all over Europe. It was inaugurated in the 19th century and is home to art from the 16th to the 19th century. Don’t miss paintings like Las Meninas by Velazquez, Madonna del Pesce by Raphael or any l´ouvres by maestros Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. The museum entrance is FREE on Mondays to Saturdays from 6pm till 8pm and on Sundays and public holidays from 5pm till 7pm.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía:
Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is a contemporary art museum and a chronological extension of the Museo del Prado. The museum is named after the Queen of Spain and was inaugurated in 1992. Don’t miss the artworks of Spain´s foremost artists from the 20th century like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. The museum entrance is FREE on Sundays.

Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando:
This museum is a former Fine Arts school which was attended by many renowned artists like Dali and Picasso. It was created in the 18th century. You can expect to find artworks by Italian, French and Flemish artists. Don’t miss the self potraits of Francisco Goya and Antonio de Pereda’s the Knight’s Dream as well as sculptures and Egyptian statuettes among others. The museum entrance is FREE on Wednesdays.

Museo Cerralbo:                                                                                                                  

Museo Cerralbo is found in a 19th century palace which used to belong to a Spanish aristocrat of the same name. Don’t miss paintings from Zurbarán, Ribera, Tintoretto and Van Dyck. The museum entrance is FREE on Saturdays from 2pm as well as on Sundays.

Museo de la Historia (Formerly known as Museo del Municipal):

The museum was inaugurated in 1929. The building was formerly a hospice and its main highlight is the Spanish baroque façade on its exteriors. The present day collection was brought together as a result of an initiative to conserve the building and turn it into a museum, by Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and Sociedad Española de Amigos del Arte. The exposition for that occasion was aptly named Exposición del Antiguo Madrid because till this day this museum hosts the collections which feature historical and urban evolutions of the city as well as representations of art and daily life from the 20th century! The museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays and entrance is always free.

Museo ABC:

Museo ABC is a graphics and illustrations museum. It was inaugurated in 2010.The museum has more than 200 000 original sketches and drawings which belong to the newspaper ABC from the 20th century. The architecture of the museum is avant-gardist and the objective was to convert the building which was a Mahou beer brewery in the 1900s into an artistic reference as well as a symbol for the cultural offerings of Madrid. There museum also hosts workshops, conferences and other artistic activities. Entrance is free.

 Museo de los Orígenes (Formerly known as Museo de San Isidro):

The museum was inaugurated in 2000 and has an art collection from the Municipal Museum as well as the Archaeological Institute. As the name suggests, this museum introduces and takes the visitor on a tour of Madrid from Prehistoric times until the periods of the establishments of the courts through its archaeological pieces, models and engravings. The museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays and entrance is free always.
