A few days ago, I got together with Peter Muller and Vivian Garcia, two talented and super laid-back musicians from the United States currently residing in Madrid, before they began their practice at their studio (which happens to double as Peter’s bedroom).  Having heard each artist perform separately on different occasions, I knew that their musical styles were quite apart from each other.  I was curious to see what their performance on Friday would be like; hence, an interview ensued.

1) Give us a brief history of your musical career and influences.

Vivian: I have been a gigging musician in Chicago and Florida since 1999. I started off doing boleros and traditional Latin American music and moved to Flamenco after collaborating with other artists. In 2006 I began playing out solo performing primarily Rumba Flamenca music and VERY recently have come to writing music in English with a bluesy folksy feel.
Peter: I have been writing music and playing guitar since 2003. I also started an Arts Collective with my best friend Vicken this year focused on creativity as Reflection and Response which has provided a venue for global dialogue on what the arts means for different people around the world.

2) What has your interaction been like with the Madrid music scene (and with each other)?

Vivian: Madrid has been an exploratory time for me musically. This is the first time I have been writing and performing music in English. Funny right… I am really excited to collaborate with Peter on everything from electronica to rap to blues. We have yet to define our sound and that is the FUN part!

Peter: Starting in Seattle in 2011 I began performing more original music. I’ve continued writing
and expanding into new genres here in Madrid, touching on more electronic feel yet also accompanying Vivian with acoustic lead parts. It’s been such a joy to be able to work on various skills with someone with so much experience and talent as her.

3) What will you two be playing at your show on Friday?

Vivian: Friday will be a mix of Peter´s hip hop originals, my folk blues originals and a peppering of electronica we´ve worked on together. And maybe a rumba or two for good measure.
Peter
:  As Vivian says the show will be an eclectic mix of the grooves we’ve been working on; surprises will definitely be in order!
