The Cheap In Madrid Crew attended the premiere of the play, Mendigando Amor. We attended the play amidst lots of expectation, because this was to be “the premiere” at the theatre in Madrid´s own Broadway street, Gran Vía, after performing in smaller, alternative theatres for 3 years.
At arrival we received heart shaped lollipops, and were ushered into theatre hall. The theatre itself is smallish and intimate with a capacity of about 300 persons. It has soft and sinking red seats that leave your eye level just above the stage floor. Back to the play: The play is directed by Roel García Serrano and interpreted by Belén López-Valcárcel and Majo Cardona. It is composed of 16 sketches wherein the actresses interpret various personas from ghetto girlfriends to empowered, working class women all struggling with love, men and relationships or lack thereof. The interpretation of typical love-romance dilemmas like whether to get married for love or not, the importance of passion in a relationship, or holding out for a reencounter after a one night stand, make this play entertaining and high-paced. Belén López and Majo Cardona do an excellent job with opportunistic wardrobe changes and on point accent adaptations to really live out each character´s beliefs and insecurities about love and relationships.
We especially like the choice of the music to accompany each adjoining scene. The music or may I say “playtrack” maintained the fun, buzz and energy of each scene while keeping the mood with the matters of love, romance and relationships. We recommend this play to everyone, but especially girlfriends on a night out and single people in general. Don’t miss this play until the 29th of July at the Pequeño Teatro Gran Vía. It runs on Thursdays at 8:30pm or Fridays and Saturdays at 9pm.You need to understand Spanish and the stereotypes in Spanish culture to really enjoy this play. The play ends on the 29th of July.
