Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, based on John le Carre’s Cold War-era spy novel, is set in 1970’s London. It follows semi-retired spy George Smiley (Gary Oldman at the top of his game), suddenly tasked with hunting a mole in the M16. The terrific cast includes Colin Firth as top deputy Bill Haydon, John Hurt, Toby Jones and Mark Strong. Its grey, murky atmosphere of paranoia recalls all the classic spy films. It’s on in English this weekend at Cines Princesa (Princesa, 3 Metro: Plaza de España or Ventura Rodríguez), Renoir – Cuatro Caminos (Raimundo Fernández 10, Villaverde, metro: Cuatro Caminos), Renoir Retiro (C/ Narvaez 42, metro: Ibiza, L9), Verdi (28, Bravo Murillo), Yelmo Cines Ideal (C/ Doctor Cortezo, 6, metro: Tirso de Molina, L 1).
Drive stars Ryan Gosling as a man who works as a Hollywood stunt driver by day—and a getaway car driver by night. He falls in love with his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), but complications arise when her husband gets out of jail. This action film, which is garnering critical acclaim, is on in English at Renoir Princesa, Renoir Retiro and Renoir Cuatro Caminos.
And finally, there’s a silent film option on right now. The Artist is a black-and-white film set in 1927 Hollywood that follows silent film star George Valentin and starlet Peppy Miller. When talkies come out, her star starts to rise, while his begins to fall.
